Implant Supported Dentures
An implant-supported denture is a removable or fixed appliance that snaps onto dental implants (titanium posts in the jawbone) for significantly enhanced stability, comfort, and function compared to traditional dentures, preventing slippage, improving biting power, and preserving jawbone structure by acting like artificial roots, ideal for those missing most teeth. These "overdentures" use attachments to connect to the implants, offering confidence to eat, talk, and laugh without worry about movement.
How They Work
- Implants as Anchors: Tiny titanium posts are surgically placed into the jawbone, fusing with it to act as strong roots.
- Attachments: Connectors (like balls or bars) are placed on the implants, and corresponding receptacles (clips, O-rings) are built into the denture.
- Snap-In Action: The denture snaps onto these attachments, securing it firmly to the implants.
Types
- Removable: The patient can take them out for cleaning; often uses 2-4 implants (snap-in dentures).
- Fixed (Non-Removable): A stronger bar connects the implants, and the denture clips onto the bar, removable only by a dentist (e.g., All-on-4).
