Wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom teeth extraction is a common oral surgery to remove the last molars, often needed if they're impacted (stuck), painful, infected, or crowding other teeth, preventing long-term oral health problems. The procedure involves local or general anesthesia, cutting gum tissue and removing bone if needed, sectioning the tooth for easier removal, and then stitching the site closed with dissolvable stitches.

Why They're Removed

  • Impaction: Teeth are trapped under the gum or bone.
  • Crowding: Not enough space, pushing other teeth.
  • Pain/Infection: Causing discomfort or gum disease.
  • Damage: Affecting adjacent teeth.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Swelling: Usually peaks around day 3.
  • Pain: Managed with prescribed or recommended pain relievers (avoid aspirin).
  • Gentle Care: Avoid brushing the area for a day, use moist heat for bruising.
  • Diet: Stick to soft foods; avoid hard/crunchy foods for a week.
  • Avoid: Smoking for at least a week.
