Dentures
Full dentures replace all teeth in an arch (upper or lower jaw) using a gum-colored base for suction, while partial dentures fill gaps when some natural teeth remain, using clasps on existing teeth for support to prevent shifting. Both are removable, custom-made appliances that improve appearance, speech, and eating, but full dentures rest on gums/palate, whereas partials anchor to natural teeth for stability, often with a metal frame.
Full Dentures (Complete Dentures)
- Who needs them: People missing all teeth in an upper or lower arch.
- How they work: A full set of artificial teeth on a gum-colored base that creates suction against the gums and palate (for uppers) for stability.
- Types: Can be conventional (placed after healing) or immediate (placed right after extractions).
- Support: Relies on suction and the shape of the gum ridge.
Partial Dentures (Removable Partial Dentures)
- Who needs them: People missing several teeth but still have healthy natural teeth.
- How they work: Fill gaps, prevent remaining teeth from shifting, and are held by clasps attached to natural teeth.
- Support:Anchored by clasps to healthy teeth; often have a metal framework.
